| Presentation Key #55 | ||
| Build Group Participation! Number 2 in a series | ||
| On-the-Spot surveys- After a short discussion or
presentation ask for quick show of hands to determine
group support of proposed ideas. Always ask a question
which allows for the expression of opposition.
This survey should be answerable with a yes or no.
Example: "In this group, how many people support this
situation? How many are opposed? Any undecided?"
This tool makes use of closed questions. It is important to phrase the question so that the choice is simple. I avoid questions beginning with "what" or "why." These words can trigger discussion. The survey question can begin with "can" or "how many." These words will trigger yes or no responses. Sometimes the actual count of the survey is less important than the view the group gets from a show of hands. The survey allows participants to silently gauge where they fit in the discussion. |
